Thermostat housing is usually made from aluminium or plastic, while many vintage thermostats use pot-metal housings. The housing's primary role is to protect the thermostat from heat, leaks, dirt and debris, but it also directs the flow of coolant when the thermostat valve opens. Most thermostats feature two gaskets: one that sits between the housing and the engine block, and another that sits inside the housing to prevent fluids contaminating the thermostat inside. If the housing or gaskets develop faults, this will expose your thermostat to extreme heat and cause leaks. This in turn will harm its ability to keep your engine at the right temperature.
