Suspension spheres play a central role in the hydropneumatic system developed by Citroen in 1990. Each sphere contains a diaphragm that sits in front of a nitrogen reservoir. The bottom of the sphere links to a hydraulic fluid circuit. When passengers get inside the car, a height corrector opens a valve and the diaphragm pressurises the fluid to raise the height. When the car is too high, the system reduces pressure and allows fluid to make its way back to the fluid reservoir. Suspension spheres help to improve handling, ride comfort and grip on the road. They are very durable and don’t tend to wear out, but issues can develop with the pump or pressure control. When this happens, it may be better to replace the whole unit to ensure every part of the sphere is fit for purpose.
