Steering boots are made from flexible rubber. They cover each CV joint and create a seal between the rack and pinion, and the tie rod end. There is one steering boot on each end of the steering gear. Each boot’s job is to prevent dirt and debris from clogging up the CV joint. Steering boots can crack due to constant use over time. If the CV joint is soaked in oil, this is a key sign that you need a new steering boot. Without proper protection, your CV joint will also crack. In extreme cases, you may have to replace the entire front axle. Meanwhile, faulty steering gaskets may result in the loss of fluid.
