The rotor arm is crucial to starting cars with mechanical ignition systems. Inside the distributor, the arm sits on top of a shaft. It is insulated from the shaft and the car body. As the rotor spins in the distributor, its contact points pass by – but do not touch - the tip of the rotor arm. The electric current is able to jump the gap between the rotor arm and each contact point. Breaks in the flow of current from the arm and rotor allow the ignition coil to produce the high voltage required to start your engine.
