Short for ‘propeller shaft’ propshafts are also known as ‘cardan shafts’ or ‘drive shafts’. They are a feature of cars where the engine and axles sit at a distance from each other, as is the case with rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Propshaft assembly consists of a few different components, including a slip joint and one or more universal joints, in addition to the shaft itself. The propshaft links to the gearbox via a universal joint. The propshaft transfers power from the gearbox output shaft to the rear differential, to which it is linked via another universal joint. As well as linking the shaft to vital parts on either end, universal joints compensate for twisting forces from the driving torque. The propshaft and its different parts are subject to great force and high temperature levels. As a result, they can suffer wear and damage over time. When this time comes, you must replace your propshaft at once. Type your registration in the yellow box for huge savings on the best propshafts and components for your car.
