Piston liners are made of aluminium or steel. The liner sits inside the engine block to form a cylinder. Its purpose is to retain a sliding surface for pistons by keeping lubricant in and transferring heat to the coolant. Piston rings form an airtight seal between the liner and the piston. This helps to stop oil leaving the cylinder. Piston liners and rings are subject to a great deal of force, as well as temperatures of over 2000°C. Overheating or worn pistons are signs of faults in either part. A damaged piston liner could also lead to your engine stalling. Worn piston rings may result in the presence of grey or white exhaust smoke. Breaks in the ring’s seal can also cause leaks and excessive oil consumption. For hot deals on high-quality piston liners and rings for your car, please type its licence number in the yellow “YOUR REG” box on this page.
