Shell Coolant Extra Ready to Use 1L
Antifreeze (or also known as Coolant) serves many purposes. Firstly, it most obviously stops the water in your engine from freezing. Secondly, it prevents the water from reaching boiling point under extreme heat conditions.
It keeps engine temperatures stable under all climate extremes and driving conditions by transferring heat from the engine to the radiator. Antifreeze/coolant also includes additional chemicals that prevent rust and corrosion in the radiator, engine and other components, resulting in protection for the whole system.
This is why antifreeze needs to be checked on a regular basis, checking its level and its quality.
Most cars have an antifreeze overflow reservoir which has 2 levels. A safe level when the antifreeze is hot and one for when it is cold. If it needs topping up, you can use a 50/50 antifreeze and water premix product.
WARNING: Always take care with hot engines, as hot pressurised liquid may pour out. If in doubt, wait till the engine is cool or consult a professional mechanic.
Antifreeze comes in many colors, which are just the preference of the manufacturer. However, when checking the quality, no matter what the color, you need to look that the liquid is clear and not brown with bits of rust floating. This is a sign that the system may need flushing and antifreeze replacing.
Generally, the most common service interval for flushing the system is every two to three years, or 24,000 to 36,000 miles.
