While petrol engines use spark plugs during ignition, diesel engines use glow plugs to start with heat. This is the reason why diesel engines typically take slightly longer to heat up and start than petrol engines. Glow plugs effectively work as electric heaters in the combustion chamber, and repeated use over a number of years can reduce their effectiveness. A typical sign of defective glow plugs is a lengthier start-up process for the engine. If you notice that it is taking even a couple of seconds longer than it normally does to start your engine, your glow plugs probably need replacing. Get a specialist mechanic to check inside the engine and, if necessary, to replace the plugs for you once you have found the right product for your vehicle at Car Parts 4 Less.
